To be clear: I will not accept money from anyone for any purpose. If in the future, I find that I'm no longer interested in being the site's ... well ... backer, then I will offer to transfer it over to another member who can take over payments at that time.

I will definitely need help both administering the forum and keeping it active, including spreading the word (without spamming.

I'll wait a good 24 hours before taking action and look forward to everyone's thoughts on the topic, including dissenting opinions regarding any detail or the idea in general.

More than happy to help in any way LA. As mentioned I've admined and modded forums before and I'm fairly savvy to the way the admin controls work.

Are you sure you don't want some help with financially starting it up? Aware that it's not a huge amount of capital, but that's awfully generous.

I've also got some marketing background from my time at the Kelley school. Some photoshop experience etc. Nothing flashy but I can bull my way through it usually.

Let me know how I can help, feel free to message me on FB or here.

Yeah, big-time generous on LA's part. For a starving grad student, it's still considered a bunch of money.

I don't know where I could help. Do you want a Foucauldian genealogical analysis of the word 'solid'? Very Happy

Spreading the word, I can do.

Wow LA you are way too solid of a character...just SOLID!!! I would too pitch in some money if you wanted it, so long as I get access to some amateur girlfriend porn in a secret form, that is all I really pay for Wink

On a serious note, I like porn.

On another serious note I am into this idea 100%. I am now excited for this forum to get itself up and running and LA literally NO RUSH. if you are busy the next few weeks than leave it for later cause no one here is leaving in the next few days or anything... at least I hope not.

I would love to be an admin solely to be able to edit the posts in the inevitable counting thread that will start. I know nothing of adminning a forum other than this one, Even then all I have done is spread the word like wildfire, and boy does that ever spread. I can get the name out to people for sure.

So to summarize: I like porn, LA has a Sweet idea that I support.

LA,

Before the Pacers bought PN from me I had a lot of experience with web hosts and vbulletin.

If you are looking for cheap webhosts I can help you out.

Actually, I am so hit or miss I will post the most popular link I got years ago:

http://www.upperhost.com/

ONE TRICK: WHEN YOU GO TO BUY A DOMAIN, TRY CLOSING OUT OF THE BROWSER BEFORE YOU PAY FOR THE DOMAIN. A LOT OF SITES WILL OFFER A HUGE DISCOUNT TO KEEP YOU AROUND. ALSO, BASIC GOOGLE SEARCHES CAN SOMETIMES FIND YOU GOOD DEALS

Good luck!

Maybe the Christians will buy US out someday!? They seem like they can handle the Cursing Thread. Wink

I like what everyone is trying to do here, I just hate it... if that makes any sense. I hate the idea of us talking finances and future prospects. The name is cute but forgettable... definitely not timeless. There are already a TON of lifestyle magazines and "manly" websites and I think we'll get lost in the shuffle. I don't have a better suggestion, I just thought I'd make my concerns clear upfront.

Also, as CGG and LA just made clear, there HAS to be a way to put multiple names on the domain name account... that way no ONE person has control! Even if that means it has to belong to a LLC and we together run THAT. It doesn't matter NOW but it will someday so we need to get this right from the start. If not... this is a deal breaker for me.

Like TJ and many others, I can help with some coding, some photoshoping, and I could be a moderator if needed. Or an "Article Writer" about video games or food or Song writing or some OTHER thing that I do well. If you are to be successful you'll need some non-stock photos and original articles to spread around the net. That way YOU are the source and not just another website with a link.

I understand what you are saying TA and where you are coming from, I dont think anyone is looking to get rich, just expand the community feel a little bit.

No one person will have control, there needs to be other admins that are not afraid to speak their minds, which is why I think I would make an excellent candidate because I say what I mean and I mean what I say.

I think we're just looking for a nicer place to converse right now TA, with a little more structure.

Focusing on things like good food, good liquor, good smokes, good books, and good people

As far as I can tell, it's just him setting up his server to accept the domain name. He hasn't purchased anything.

OH! I was kind of wondering if I needed to go out and buy it or someone already took care of it.

Right now, I'm looking at a plan that is a *little* pricey ($25/month) but includes unlimited bandwidth and storage, hosting, forum software and support all under one roof. It also has a promise of data export to any other forum software. Imagine being guaranteed to take Market Square to another host.

I'm not opposed to CGG's plan, but if we go with CGG's hosting, we have to buy forum software and maintain it ourselves which amplifies the hassle and initial cost (VBulletin is something like $200 right out of the gate.) Also, vBulletin is a bit clunky both on the social networking and expanding sides.

Let's keep talking. I think we need to address both the positive and the negative "whatifs" that posts like TA's can provide.

On TA's concern, what I have is a pledge of donation and a concept. I'm not necessarily looking to start an online magazine. I'm more interested in a forum/community. so right there, we set ourselves apart just a little bit. and by "expand" I mean 50-100 weekly visitors instead of 20. My idea is not too big and is not about making a magazine a la the "new PD".

In the end, I want to have a killer forum not unlike Market Square, but run by a committee of admins who have the community's best interests in mind. We have to admit that Market Square was under the umbrella of PD, which was a one-man-show. I was also clear that the one man running it didn't particularly care for the community aspect of Market Square (or at least certain numerical elements of it).

N8R, this forum software seems to run pretty well. I wonder what it is and what their hosting options are? I also wonder if they will support using a dot com name directly instead of needing the "Youneed.us" part.

Please give me more of your thoughts community members!
